Scotch Plains, originally known as “Scotsplain” is believed by some historians to have been named after the first Scot settlers. The first recorded use of the name “Scotch Plains” was in the will of Nathaniel Bonnell in 1736. However, in a survey taken in 1769 and a map published in 1778, which is on display in the South Side Firehouse, the name “Scotsplain” still appears. Scot was the only son of the illustrious Sir John Scot of Scotstarvet, Scotland, and was of the Scott clan. Is its quite possible that as he set sail in 1685 he wore his cloak of “dress red” in defiance of the Scottish rule. George and John Alexander are reported to have come in 1685 with the Scottish emigration and had a large allotment of land in Scotch Plains. One man who helped weave the life of Scotch Plains in its present day pattern was William Darby. He was instrumental in forming the first church of our town, the Baptist church built in 1747. He gave the land for the first school built in 1768. Another leader, who because of his importance to the community was made a captain in the Revolutionary militia, was Recompense Stanberry. His home and tavern still stand on the corner of Park and Front, now knows as the Stage House Inn. The date 1737 is preserved on an original stone fireplace and Stanbery’s battered sword hangs over on eof the mantles. When the Swift Sure Stage line was in full gallop in the early 1800’s, the Inn was one of the most popular stops on the road from Philadelphia to Elizabethtown. In Revolutionary times the country around Scotch Plains was the scene of numerous skirmishes. On June 26, 1777, an engagement took place in the South end of the town. Until 1794 Scotch Plains continued to be part of Elizabethtown. In that year Westfield Township was created, which included this area. The next change in government came in the year 1877 when Scotch Plains, including Fanwood, became Fanwood Township. At that time it is recorded that the township had a population of 325. One square mile was separated out of Fanwood Township in 1895 and was called Fanwood Borough. The two Fanwoods existed side by side until March 22, 1917. On that day, through the efforts of George H. Johnston, the Legislature agreed to give the town its original Colonial name – Scotch Plains. The town seal – Scottish Thistle, some Indian arrows and feathers, an old coach and a cannon – make a tightly woven picture of the last 300 years.
